ThunderCubs - Part V is an episode from the original series of ThunderCats. Written by Peter Lawrence, it originally aired on September 9, 1988.
Summary[]
Lion-O must retrieve the Book of Omens from Mumm-Ra on New Thundera as well as rescue his friends from the clutches of the Lunataks on Third Earth.
Story[]
Mumm-Ra tries to stop the ThunderCubs from taking off in the Feliner but Lion-O uses the Sword of Omens to create a take off ramp that allows the Feliner to fly away to Third Earth. Baby Snarf then uses the Magical Flute to hypnotize Ma-Mutt and Lion-O seizes the moment to blast Mumm-Ra back to his New Black Pyramid. Once inside the pyramid, the Ancient Spirits of Evil tell Mumm-Ra to rest and promise him that during his next transformation, he will gain phenomenal powers.
On Third Earth, the Lunataks are forcing the captured ThunderCats to mine for Thundrillium from the Thundrillium Mine. They have even added the Berbils to their roster of slaves. The ThunderKittens however, manage to escape, with a little help from Snowman; the latter then shows them a display of an object approaching Third Earth, which WilyKat immediately identifies as the Feliner. The twins are excited and anticipating the return and support of their friends, but are surprised and dismayed when they discover the ThunderCubs; nevertheless, the quintet make for DarkSide to rescue the Tower ThunderCats. They are initially able to use the Cat’s Eyes to navigate the Forest of Mists, but the devices soon lose power; the Feliner crashes in the darkness, losing one wing in the process, and the ThunderCats are left stranded in the Forest. Fortunately, WilyKit remembers about Cheetara’s sixth sense even when Cheetara herself does not; using this ability, the five are able to make it through onto DarkSide.
Back on New Thundera, Lion-O and baby Snarf arrive in the New Black Pyramid to retrieve the Book of Omens. The pyramid appears at first to be empty, but then an ominous shadow appears as Mumm-Ra — now more powerful than the two have ever seen him and wielding the Sword of Plun-Darr — rises out of the cauldron behind Lion-O, and the two engage in a climactic duel. Lion-O appears to be severely outmatched, dodging — or being knocked back by — most of Mumm-Ra’s strikes after attempting to block them, while Mumm-Ra seems to have the upper hand and eventually knocks the Sword of Omens out of Lion-O’s hands. Snarf attempts to help but is pounced upon by Ma-Mutt, who causes him to drop the Book of Omens but not the magic flute; with this instrument, he commands Ma-Mutt to stay where he is until otherwise addressed. With Lion-O hanging by the line of the Claw Shield from one of the statues of the Ancient Spirits of Evil, Mumm-Ra taunts him before throwing the Sword of Plun-Darr at him; however, Lion-O dodges the strike and the sword plunges into the statue’s chest. The entire pyramid begins to crumble and collapse; as Mumm-Ra pitches backwards into the cauldron, Lion-O grabs the Sword of Omens as he and Snarf and run for the door.
Meanwhile, the ThunderCubs & ThunderKittens are waiting for SkyTomb at the Lunataks’ customary watering site. When the flying fortress arrives to refill its water reservoirs, the five sneak aboard via the ventilation shafts. WilyKit & Panthro make for the power room to shut down the furnace and necessitate a switch to emergency power, while WilyKat, Cheetara, and Tygra head for the lower corridors to find their friends. Chilla is at the controls in the power room, but WilyKit manages to trick her into freezing the furnace while Panthro disables the control station by hitting it with a wrench. The Lunataks are thrown into disarray when the power goes down; meanwhile, Cheetara, Tygra, and WilyKat use the Cat’s Eyes to locate the Tower ThunderCats, who were summarily alerted to events occurring when the lights shut off. The ThunderCats & Berbils make their way through SkyTomb’s darkened corridors, but so are Luna, Amok, & Red-Eye…
As Mumm-Ra’s pyramid collapses around them, Lion-O and Snarf turn back to rescue the still hypnotized Ma-Mutt from the imploding pyramid, and Lion-O asks him how Mumm-Ra got to New Thundera. Ma-Mutt then takes them to the Mumm-Raft, and Lion-O requests that he take them home. The other eight ThunderCats, as well as the formerly captured Berbils, are fleeing SkyTomb when they are confronted by the entire force of the Lunataks. Just as it seems a showdown is about to go down, Lion-O arrives in the Mumm-Raft. He wastes no time in severing the rocky outcropping upon which the Lunataks are standing, plunging them into the water. Snarf then beckons everyone into the Mumm-Raft, and the ThunderCats make their escape in a swirl of light while the drenched Lunataks look on in shock and dismay.
At the Cave of Time, the ThunderCubs are restored to their normal age, and celebration ensues. Meanwhile, Ma-Mutt, now having snapped out of his trance, heads to the Black Pyramid where Mumm-Ra contacts him through the cauldron. Having become stranded on New Thundera, he explains that only the Ancient Spirits of Evil can bring him back to Third Earth from the cauldron. They oblige, and Ma-Mutt joyously leaps into his arms.
