New Thundera is the result of the reformation of the destroyed planet Thundera. Many years ago when Jaga took the Sword of Plun-Darr from Ratilla, he cast it in the deepest canyons of Thundera, hoping to keep it from falling into evil hands. Unknown to him, the power of the Sword was so great that it caused the entire planet to explode. While the ThunderCats and many other inhabitants of the planet escaped before its destruction, some survived on the broken up larger chunks of the planet.

Many centuries later, the pieces of Thundera started to concentrate in one area and the planet started to reform. It is not known exactly as to what catalyzed this event, but it is thought that Mumm-Ra may have played a hand in reforming it in order to obtain the Sword of Plun-Darr as well as the Treasure of Thundera.

The newly formed planet became New Thundera. Despite being only half the size of the original planet, it still retained a number of buildings, inhabitants, and geographical locations of Thundera, as well as new creatures and environments that were formed with the planet.

Unlike Thundera, New Thundera reformed very close to the Moons of Plun-Darr, which now orbit it. These Moons have a strong influence on some areas of the planet which are closest to them.

Initially when the ThunderCats learned of New Thundera, they made several trips to the planet to search for the pieces of the Treasure of Thundera. Later on, when they had rid Third Earth of Mumm-Ra, the Mutants and the Lunataks, the ThunderCats permanently shifted to New Thundera, leaving behind Tygra and Pumyra as well as forming the League of Third Earth to safeguard the planet.
