Way Back... When?:[]

The story begins with Lion-O and the ThunderCats manacled with other slaves, trudging exhaustedly through a desert under the sadistic gaze of Thugron guards. As one of their companions falls, Lion-O overpowers a guard, only to be attacked by the others using their electrowhips. After he recovers, Zar-Thule, his grateful new friend, asks how the ThunderCats came to be captured. Lion-O recounts how a scouting mission in the Swamp of Serpents lead to an encounter with the Astral Moat Monster. The creature attacked the ThunderTank and after Lion-O summoned Cheetara, Tygra and the Thunderkittens to help him and Panthro, a tear appeared in the sky and they were sucked into it.

After hearing Lion-O’s story, Zar-Thule tells them that they are being taken to work on the Onyx Pyramid of Pharaoh Ka-Rey-Bar. When they arrive and the Thugrons unchain them, the ThunderCats rush them. The Thunderkittens are able to steal their whips and they bring them down like a cat’s cradle on top of the slavers, leaving them a screaming, twitching mess. But in their moment of triumph, a familiar voice greets them. Mumm-Ra reveals that he opened the portal! Nearby, Snarf and the very angry Astral Moat Monster find themselves in the barracks of Mumm-Ra’s army. Back at the pyramid, Mumm-Ra reveals that he is the pharoah, a disguise to make it easier to rule First Earth. He also tells the ThunderCats that he knows their future and their past. The ThunderCats try to distract Mumm-Ra and get the Sword of Omens but he is too powerful.

Only when the Astral Moat Monster breaks into the room, scattering Thugrons in all directions are they able to free themselves. As they converge upon Mumm-Ra, he recasts his spell, sending them back to Third Earth. Jaga confirms that they are home and tells them not to worry about their saviour. For back on First Earth, the Astral Moat Monster has found the Astral Moat and his earlier self, leaving them both very happy!

  • This annual features two full page mini-posters.

ThunderCats Bullet Point Trivia[]

  • In Way Back... When, Mumm-Ra already knows of the ThunderCats and convinces them that it is because he knows everything. But in Past Perils Times Two (ThunderCats annual 1989), Lion-O is sent back in time to before the events of Way Back... When and unwittingly tells Mumm-Ra his own future, thus creating the kind of temporal paradox that writers are so fond of!
  • This annual is advertised heavily in Marvel ThunderCats comics towards the end of 1987, including as a free competition prize in issue 29.
